Any of a group of related viruses which includes the para-influenza viruses and those causing mumps, measles, distemper, and rinderpest, and which differ from the myxoviruses in their larger and more variable size and in being hæmolytic.

Paramyxoviruses..are characterized by larger sized particles, 1000–5000 Å in diameter, whose internal component is 180 Å wide and more loosely packed within the virus envelope.
