para-aortic, a. Anat.|ˌpærəeɪˈɔːtɪk| [f. para-1 + aortic a.] Situated beside the aorta; used chiefly (in para-aortic body) as an epithet of certain paraganglia.
1927Jrnl. Anat. LXI. 317 The pre- and para-aortic tissue of a 16-week embryo from the region of the supra⁓renal glands is seen on section to contain the semilunar ganglia, collections of haemo-lymphoid tissue, and other encapsuled masses (the Zuckerkandl anlage). 1952Ibid. LXXXVI. 357 Wrete (1927) observed the continuity of the chromaffin bodies of the para-aortic region with the chromaffin tissue of the adrenal glands. Ibid. 358 Because of the lack of uniformity in the interpretation of the ‘paraganglia’, it has been replaced in the present investigation by the topographical term ‘para-aortic bodies’. A para-aortic body is defined as an encapsulated collection of chromaffin cells lying in intimate contact with the sympathetic nervous system and yielding a pressor substance after extraction. 1959R. D. Lockhart et al. Anat. Human Body 488/2 The paraganglia, small brownish masses,..are similar to the suprarenal medulla... The largest masses, the para-aortic bodies, a third of an inch long at birth, lie on each side of the inferior mesenteric artery. 1965[see paraganglion]. 1973Gray's Anat. (ed. 35) 144/1 Chromaffin organs are found in connection with certain..of the secondary plexuses of the sympathetic system; the largest members of this series are the para-aortic bodies,..commonly termed paraganglia. Ibid. 1381/2 The para-aortic bodies..attain their maximum size in the first three years of post-natal life, when the largest takes the form of two elongated brownish bodies..which lie on each side of the inferior mesenteric artery.
