In Eng. the sense has been from an early period gradually extended and transferred, until that of ‘bread-room’ is now practically lost sight of: cf. quots. 1706 and 1768.]
1. a. A room or apartment in a house, etc., in which bread and other provisions are kept; also (butler's pantry or housemaid's pantry), one in which the plate, linen, etc. for the table are kept (see butler n. 3).
