pan-loaf [pan n.1] A loaf baked in a pan; chiefly Sc. Also used fig. of an affected or cultured accent, or of someone whose behaviour is regarded as pretentious, this usage originating in the fact that a pan-loaf, being more expensive, was a sign of affluence. Hence pan-loafy a.
