Paneth Histology.|ˈpænɛθ| The name of Joseph Paneth (1857–90), Austrian physiologist, used attrib., in the possessive, and with of to designate a secretory cell present at the base of the crypts of Lieberkühn in the small intestine, and also the eosinophilic granules characteristic of their cytoplasm.
1899Veterinarian LXXII. 555 These granular cells of Paneth showed the same reaction, and I was forced to conclude that they were mucus-forming. Ibid. 560 The cytoplasm in some instances has been observed to contain granules—Paneth's granules. 1938Gray's Anat. (ed. 27) 1329 The deeper cells, especially in the duodenal glands, contain granules which stain characteristically with phosphotungstic haematoxylin and are termed granules of Paneth. 1968Passmore & Robson Compan. Med. Stud. I. xxx. 21/1 There are only about a dozen Paneth cells in each crypt, but because of the enormous number of crypts the total mass of Paneth cells is large. 1976Cell & Tissue Kinetics IX. 72 The number and localization of Paneth cells was not affected by changes in crypt cell kinetics during recovery after irradiation. |
