panchax, n. Brit. |ˈpantʃaks|, U.S. |ˈpænˌtʃæks| Plural unchanged, panchaxes[rare] [‹ scientific Latin panchax, specific name (see quot. 1822), later also a genus name (Cuvier and A. Valenciennes Hist. nat. des poissons (1846) XVIII. 380), of uncertain origin; perhaps > comb. form), although the suffixation is unclear); apparently so called on account of the entirety of the tail fin (compare quot. 1822).] Originally: a fish of the former genus Panchax of small Old World tropical killifishes (family Poeciliidae); (in form Panchax) the genus itself. In later use more widely: any of numerous killifishes, esp. of the genus Aplocheilus, and including many popular aquarium species. Members of the former genus Panchax are now included in Aplocheilus.
