Palæocene, a. Geol.|ˈpæliːəʊ-, ˈpeɪliːəʊsiːn| Also (chiefly U.S.) Paleo-. [ad. F. paléocène (W. Ph. Schimper Traité de Paléont. végétale (1874) III. 680), f. paléo- palæo-, paleo + Gr. καινός new, recent (cf. eocene, oligocene, etc.).] Of, pertaining to, or designating the lowest series of the Tertiary system, lying below the Eocene and comprising the Montian and perhaps the Danian stages; (formerly often not recognized as a distinct series but incorporated in the Eocene).
