[From Palmerin de Oliva, the legendary illegitimate son of a Byzantine princess, whose name (f. Sp. palmera palm-tree) is said to have been derived from his exposure as an infant in a wicker basket among palms and olives on a mountain side. He was the original hero of the Palmerin romances which appeared in Spain in the 16th c.]
