‖ paˈlank, -ka [a. F. palanque, It. palanca ‘a defence made of great poles or stakes’; so Pol. palanka, Rom. palanca, Turkish palanqah. The med.L. forms palanga, phalanga (Du Cange, Körting) appear to be from Gr. ϕάλαγξ, ϕάλαγγα trunk, log, pole. The pal- forms may be influenced by L. pālus stake.] A kind of fortified camp: see quot. 1853.
