‖ pa'anga|pɑːˈɑːŋgə| [Native.] The monetary unit of Tonga.
1966Times 21 May 8 Tonga has decided against calling its new decimal currency unit the dollar because the native word, ‘tola’, also means a pig's snout, the soft end of a coconut, or, in vulgar language, a mouth. The new unit, to be introduced next year, will be called ‘pa'anga’, which has only two alternative meanings—a coin-shaped seed and, not surprisingly, money. 1973Whitaker's Almanac 1974 986/2 Pa'anga (T$) of 100 Seniti. |
