‖ Orthoptera, n. pl. Entom.|ɔːˈθɒptərə| [mod.L., neuter pl. of orthopterus, f. Gr. ὀρθό-ς straight + πτερόν wing.] An order of Insects, distinguished by more or less coriaceous and usually straight and narrow fore wings, broad longitudinally-folded hind wings, and incomplete metamorphosis; comprising the cockroaches, walking-stick insects, leaf-insects, crickets, grasshoppers, etc.
