[Composed of the names of Orpheus and Arion, mythical musicians of antiquity. Cf.

A large instrument of the lute kind with from six to nine pairs of metal strings played with a plectrum: much used in the 17th century.
Said to have been invented c 1560 by John Rose, citizen of London, living in Bridewell. See Grove Dict. Mus. II. 612.
