A mild narcotic analgesic, chemically related to methadone, which is given orally (usu. as the hydrochloride, a whitish powder) esp. in cases of chronic or recurrent pain, its effects being similar to but weaker than those of codeine; (+)-α-4-dimethylamino-3-methyl-1,2-diphenylbut-2-yl propionate, (CH3)2N·CH2·CH(CH3)·C(C6H5)(CH2·C6H5)·O·CO·CH2CH3.
