oribatid, n. and a.|ɒˈrɪbətɪd| [f. mod.L. family name Oribatidæ, f. generic name Oribata (P. A. Latreille in C. N. S. Sonnini Buffon's Hist. Nat. Insectes (1802) III. 65), perh. f. Gr. ὀρειβάτης mountain-ranging: see -id3.] A. n. A small, oval, dark-coloured mite belonging to the family Oribatidæ or the order Oribatoidea, which includes non-parasitic mites with a thickened integument, giving them a leathery appearance. B. adj. Of or pertaining to this group of mites.
