Gr. ὄµβρος shower of rain: omˈbrogenous a., of moorland or marsh, needing a high rainfall for its development; ˈombrograph [see -graph], ‘an automatic instrument for recording the time of occurrence, quantity, and rapidity of rainfall’ (Funk, 1893); omˈbrology [see -logy], the branch of meteorology that deals with rain; hence ombroˈlogical a.; omˈbrometer [see -meter], a rain-gauge; ˈombrophil [see -phil], see quot.; omˈbrophilous a. [a. G. ombrophile (J. Wiesner 1893, in Sitzungsber. Akad. Wiss. Wien Abth. I. CII. 503)], of a plant, able to flourish in conditions of excessive moisture; so omˈbrophily; ˈombrophobe [see -phobe], see quot.; omˈbrophobous a. [a. G. ombrophobe (J.
