ˈoliphant arch. Also 3–5 olifa(u)nt. [a. OF. olifant: see elephant.] Obsolete form of elephant, occasionally retained by modern writers as a historical spelling in sense ‘horn or trumpet of ivory’: see elephant 4 b.
