▪ I. oligarch, n.|ˈɒlɪgɑːk| [ad. Gr. ὀλιγάρχ-ης, f. ὀλίγ-ος few + ἄρχ-ειν to rule. Cf. mod.L. oligarcha, mod.F. oligarque (19th c. in Littré).] A member of an oligarchy; one of a few holding power in a state.
