ˈohmic, a. [c gray][f. ohm2 + -ic.][/c] That obeys Ohm's law, or exhibits behaviour consistent with it.
1889Electr. Rev. 11 Oct. 411 At present Dr. Fleming and a few others talk of ‘ohmic’ resistance, to distinguish resistance from the relation between the back electromotive force and the current. 1904Electrician Nov. 150/1 The energy dissipation due to ohmic resistance in the metal. 1926R. W. Lawson tr. Hevesy & Paneth's Man. Radioactivity i. 14 This proportionality between current and potential..only maintains for the initial part of the curve (the region of Ohmic current, cf. XXVIII. 471 (heading) Semi-conductor with two p-n junctions and ohmic metal contacts. 1967Electronics 6 Mar. 136/2 Ohmic heating in the device induces diffusions that form p-n junctions. Hence ˈohmically adv., by, or as a result of, ohmic resistance.
