b. transf. Used, in various contexts specifying direction, esp. with reference to the target in shooting, to give bearings corresponding to the positions of the numerals on a clock face, from the standpoint of one facing twelve o'clock. (Cf. quot. 1797 s.v. clock n.1 4.)
