1. The introduction of something new; a change, an innovation.
Common in Sc. use from c 1560 to 1650. Now rare.
1533Bellenden Livy iv. ii. (S.T.S.) II. 54 In þe nixt petitioun we desire na novatiouns nor new materis. 1561–2Reg. Privy Council Scot. I. 266 Gif ony suddane alteratioun or novatioun be preissit or attemptit. 1607J. Norden Surv. Dial. i. 22, I like not nouations and new deuices that our forefathers haue not seene or done. a1670Spalding Troub. Chas. 3. Law. The substitution of a new debtor, creditor, contract, etc., in place of an old one.
