[Of obscure origin. Both n. and vb. correspond in meaning to mod. north. dial. nawp, noup, nope, but the variation of vowel in these forms normally indicates a Scand. *naup n., *naupa v., which in the Destr. Troy would appear as *nawpe.] a. trans. To strike down. b. intr. To give a blow to, to keep on giving blows.
