[ad. mod.L. mysticētus, a. Gr. µυστίκητος (in old edd. of Aristotle Hist. Anim. iii. xii, where mod. edd. read ὁ µῦς τὸ κῆτος, ‘the ‘mouse’ (i.e. the whale so called)’).
The identity of the animal referred to by Aristotle has not been determined. In old Latin translations µυστίκητος was rendered musculus piscis and was thus associated with the animal so named by Pliny (‘the whale's guide’).]

The suborder of cetaceans consisting of the whalebone whales: opposed to the Denticete or toothed whales. Cf. mystacocete.
