1646Sir T. Browne Pseud. Ep. iii. xxv. 173 A Bittor maketh that mugient noyse, or as we terme it Bumping by putting its bill into a reed [etc.]. 1816Parr Let. to Routh 8 Mar., Wks. 1828 VII. 671 He, like myself, hates the final mugient M in Latin. Hence † ˈmugiency, a bellowing.
