ˈmortar-stone Chiefly Sc. and north. dial. (Sc. and north. -stane). [f. mortar n.1 Cf. MDu. mortiersteen.] A block of stone hollowed to form a mortar; spec. ‘a stone formerly used for preparing barley, by separating it from the husks’ (Jam.).
