A street-song of the Cape Malays.
1949Cape Times 10 Jan. 2/6 He hoped that the Cape ‘moppies’ or comic songs and the liedjies would become a regular feature of future carnivals. 1953Du Plessis & Lückhoff Malay Quarter iii. 48 Moppies are little songs (often of doubtful content) sung in order to challenge, deride, or irritate the listener, or merely as foolery. When singing a moppie, the singer often includes a person's name, and if the person referred to cannot respond in similar vein, he is laughed at by all present. 1974S. Afr.
