Montanism|ˈmɒntənɪz(ə)m| [f. Montān-us (see below) + -ism.] The tenets of a heretical Christian sect, founded in Phrygia by Montanus about the middle of the 2nd century. Montanus claimed for himself and two female associates prophetic inspiration. The tenets of the sect were millenarian and severely ascetic, but otherwise did not differ appreciably from those of the Catholic church.
