moggel|ˈmɒgəl| Also moekul. [Afrikaans; see quot. 1902.] A South African freshwater fish of the genus Labeo, esp. L. capensis, belonging to the family Cyprinidæ.

Barbus capensis] is now, however, called by the Dutch ‘Moggel’—a word which..may be a corruption of the Latin Mugil, a generic name which has been applied to this fish, or it may refer to the general appearance and shape of this fish, ‘moggel’ in Dutch signifying a clumsy child. 1913[see baardman]. 1947K. Its chief character is the mouth with its thick fleshy lips; these form a sucking disc with which the fish browses on the algae and weeds on the rocks. The barbels are not prominent. |
