[ad. mod.Heb. mizrāḥ, f. Heb. mizrāḥ east, f. zāraḥ to rise.]
The east, the direction of Jerusalem; a sacred picture facing east; the Judaic practice of turning towards Jerusalem in prayer. Hence Mizˈrachi, a religiously traditionalist Zionist organization, amalgamated with Hapoel Hamizrachi in 1957.
