mer- used in various combinations (chiefly nonce-wds.) formed after mermaid, denoting imaginary beings of the mermaid kind, as mer-baby, mer-child, mer-dog, mer-folk, mer-lady, mer-monster, mer-people, mer-wife. Cf. merman, merwoman.
