▪ I. Maxim, n.2|ˈmæksɪm| [From the name of Sir Hiram S. Maxim, the inventor.] In full Maxim (machine) gun, Maxim mitrailleuse, or bomb Maxim: A single-barrelled quick-firing machine gun, the barrel of which is surrounded by an outer casing filled with water to keep the parts cool, and the mechanism so adjusted that any number of shots can be fired in a given time up to six hundred rounds a minute. Also Maxim-Nordenfelt gun, a modification of the original Maxim gun.
