In 17–18th c. a common designation used by Protestants for a Roman Catholic place of worship.
1644in Wallington Notices of Reign of Chas. I (1869) II. 205 They build their Mass houses in every street. 1688Evelyn Diary 7 Oct., A Jesuite, who in the Masse-house..had disparag'd the Scripture. 1780Johnson Lett. to Mrs. Thrale 9 June, At night the outrages began by the demolition of the mass-house by Lincoln's Inn. 1809Kendall Trav.
