mannose Chem.|ˈmænəʊs, -əʊz| [a. G. mannose (Fischer & Hirschberger 1888, in Ber. d. Deut. Chem. Ges. XXI. 1805), f. mann(it)ose mannitose.] A crystalline sugar, C6H12O6, which is known in three optically isomeric forms which are epimers of those of glucose, and whose dextrorotatory form is obtained by the hydrolysis of mannans.
