† maˈmuque Obs. [a. F. mamuque (Du Bartas), ad. Sp. mamuco (Lopez de Gomara 1552–3), the source of which is the corrupt form Mamuco Diata occurring in the Cologne edition (Jan. 1523–4) of Max. Transylvanus De Moluccis, where the Rome edition of Nov. 1523 has the more correct Manuccodiata: see manucodiata.] A fabulous bird, the description of which is founded on erroneous accounts of the Bird of Paradise.
