1. A proprietary name for a reddish-brown crystalline bacteriostatic dye, 2′,4′-diaminoazobenzene-4-sulphonamide, C12H13N5O2S, which was the first of the sulphonamide drugs to be known and was given (usu. orally) in the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections; formerly also called Red Prontosil.
