‖ makiwara, n. Karate.|makiˈwara, anglicized mækɪˈwaːrə| [Jap., lit. ‘sheaved straw’, f. maki a roll, something rolled up + wara straw.] An object (orig. a post or board covered with straw, hemp, etc.) intended to be struck during training in order to toughen the skin of the hands and feet.
