[Chinese ma-ch῾iao (Shanghai dial. -tsiang) sparrows (f. ma hemp + tsiang small birds), the name of the game.]
An old Chinese game resembling certain card games, introduced into Europe and America in the early 1920s. The 136 or 144 pieces used in the game are known as tiles, and they are divided into five or six suits. The object of the players, usually four in number, is to build a hand containing four sets of three tiles and a pair. Also attrib.
