An instrument for measuring magnetic forces, esp. the force of terrestrial magnetism at any point.

Hence magˌneto-ˈmetric, -ˈmetrical adjs., of, pertaining to, or measured by the magnetometer. magneˈtometry, the measurement of magnetic force by means of the magnetometer (Cent. Dict.).
