[a. Icel. mæði, lit. ‘shortness of breath’.]
a. A slowly progressive form of interstitial pneumonia in sheep and goats, caused by the visna-maedi virus.

VI. 456 Visna and maedi are virus diseases in sheep which were prevalent in Iceland from approximately 1935 to 1951. 1974Progress Med. Virol. XVIII. 336 The chronic progressive pneumonia acquired the Icelandic name ‘maedi’, which means dyspnoea, the most prominent clinical sign of the disease. Maedi was first identified by Gíslason in 1939 in a remote northern district, where neither visna nor adenomatosis was found.
