Macaronesia, n. Chiefly Bot.|ˌmækərə(ʊ)ˈniːzjə, -ʒə| [mod. L., f. Gr. µακάρων νῆσοι Islands of the Blessed (islands in the western ocean later identified with the Canaries, etc.) + -ia1, after Polynesia n., etc.] A biogeographical region which embraces islands in the eastern North Atlantic, principally the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde Islands.
