Lot-us, the generic name, + austral-is, the specific epithet (see Australian n. and a.), of the lotus (lotus 5) from which it was first isolated: see -in1.] A toxic crystalline compound, C11H19NO6, which occurs in Lotus australis and in white clover (Trifolium repens).
