Lonsdale|ˈlɒnzdeɪl| The title of Hugh Cecil Lowther (1857–1944), fifth earl of Lonsdale, used attrib. to denote any of various belts conferred upon professional boxing champions of the United Kingdom. Also transf. So to give (someone) the Lonsdale (slang), to dismiss, repudiate, ‘throw out’ (cf. belt n.4).
