The name of H. Yukawa (b. 1907), Japanese physicist, used attrib. with reference to the theory of the strong interaction between nucleons put forward by him, in which it is mediated by the exchange of particles (Yukawa particles) subsequently identified with pions; Yukawa potential, a potential function of the form V = V0(r/r0)-1 exp(-r/r0), occurring in Yukawa's theory of the nuclear force.
