1948Amer. Jrnl. Psychotherapy 685 To help his patients in their spiritual distress the author [sc. Frankl] uses the art of reasoning, i.e., ‘logotherapy’, and as his method is principally based on an explanation of the meaning of existence, he calls it ‘Existential Analysis’. 1953Ibid. VII. 10 To overcome psychologism we have introduced a psychotherapeutic method which we have called Logotherapy, an heuristic opposite to psychotherapy in its hitherto accepted narrow psychological sense. Logotherapy is to be understood as a therapy which derives from spiritual sources, and aims toward a spiritual goal. 1964I. Lasch tr. Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning ii. 98 In logotherapy the patient is actually confronted with and reoriented toward the meaning of his life. Ibid. 99 According to logotherapy, this striving to find a meaning in one's life is the primary motivational force in man. 1968Reinecke & Bailey tr. Rudin's Psychotherapy & Relig. ix. 188 We should not bypass Viktor Frankl's logotherapy, since this is the approach which most encompasses the spiritual dimensions of man. 1972W. C. Coe Challenges Personal Adjustment vi. 141 V. E. Frankl..has developed what he calls ‘logotherapy’. Its aim is to provide meaning..to man's existential being, uniqueness, and responsibility for self-actualization. |
