linoxyn Chem.|lɪˈnɒksɪn| [a. Du. linoxyne (G. J. Mulder Scheikundige Verhand. en Onderzoekingen (1865) IV. i. 120), f. L. līn-um flax (see line n.1): see oxy- and -in1.] Any of various gelatinous or resinous substances obtained by oxidation of linseed oil by air.
1876J. Harley Royle's Man. Materia Med. (ed. 6) 714 By saponification linseed oil is resolved into glycerin and linoleic acid... This, when exposed in thin layers to the air, gradually increases in weight, and is converted into..oxylinoleic acid, C16H26O5,H2O. At 212° it loses water, becomes of a blood-red colour, and forms linoxyn, C32H54O11. 1925Jrnl. Soc. Chem. Industry 7 Aug. 407t/2 When linseed oil is exposed for five or six days of warm weather in films so thin as to contain less than 0·05 g. of oil per 100 sq. cm. area, a linoxyn can be obtained from the dried (autoxidised) product having the formula C57H96O20. 1969R. F. Lang tr. Henglein's Chem. Technol. 774 Linoleum serves as floor covering and contains as basic materials linoxyn (oxidized linseed oil), cork flour, and resins. 1972Materials & Technol. V. xiii. 439 The insoluble linoxyn is highly cross-linked and polymerised. |
