F. limbique (see quot. 1901), f. limbe, limb n.2 + -ique, -ic.] Pertaining to, or having the character of, a border; in limbic lobe (of cerebrum), ‘term applied by Broca to the gyrus fornicatus and its prolongation, constituting the anterior part of the uncinate gyrus, because they are marked off in nearly all mammals from the surrounding convolutions’ (Syd. Soc. Lex.); also limbic fissure, the fissure surrounding this lobe. Also, of or pertaining to the limbic lobe or limbic system; limbic system, a region of the brain comprising the limbic lobe and certain neighbouring areas (see quot. 19671).

Fissure, Limbic Fissure (of Broca), the fissure surrounding Broca's great limbic lobe. It includes the supercallosal, precuneal, and part of the collateral fissures. 1899W. B. Lewis Mental Dis. (ed. 15) 631 The term limbic lobe (grande lobe limbique) was introduced by Broca in 1878, and under it he included two convolutions, viz. the callosal and hippocampal. 1952Electroencephalogr. & Clin. Neurophysiol. IV. 407 The limbic system is comprised of the cortex contained in the great limbic lobe of Broca..together with subcortical cell stations. 1957H. H. Jasper et al. R. Noback Human Nervous Syst. viii. 224/1 The difficult-to-define limbic system consists of the limbic lobe..some subcortical nuclei (septal nuclei and amygdala), and neural pathways to other nuclear stations of the brain... Some investigators include the ‘other’ nuclei (habenular nucleus, hypothalamus, midbrain tegmentum, thalamus, and interpeduncular nucleus) in the limbic system. Ibid. 226/2 The midbrain and thalamic reticular nuclei receive inputs from several limbic pathways. 1970Nature 28 Feb. 797/1 Other behaviour patterns..have been elicited by stimulating hypothalamic and limbic regions in many species. 1971J.
