yenite Min.|ˈjiːnaɪt| [ad. F. yénite (Lelièvre, Jrnl. des Mines, 1807), f. Jena + -ite1: see quot. 1868.] A former synonym of ilvaite.
1816P. Cleaveland Min. (1822) I. 394 Before the blow⁓pipe the Yenite is easily fusible into a dull, opaque, black globule. 1868Dana Min. 297 Named Ilvaite from the Latin name of the island (Elba) on which it was found; Lievrite after its discoverer [Lelièvre]; Yenite (should have been Jenite) in commemoration of the battle of Jena, in 1806. The Germans, and later the French, have rightly rejected the name yenite, on the ground that commemorations of political hostility or triumph are opposed to the spirit of science. |
