lewistonite Min.|ˈluːɪstənaɪt| [f. Lewiston, the name of the city in Utah, U.S.A., near which it was found + -ite1.] A basic phosphate of calcium, potassium, and sodium, (Ca,K,Na)5(PO4)3(OH), found as colourless to pale green hexagonal crystals; potassian hydroxyapatite.
1930Larsen & Shannon in Amer. Mineralogist XV. 326 Some of the hexagonal prisms which are very much like the dehrnite have less alkali and much more water. Chemically they are so different from dehrnite as to give them species rank and the name lewistonite is proposed after Lewiston, Utah. 1942Ibid. XXVII. 297 Lewistonite..shows wide variation in its properties. Stout hexagonal crystals associated with oolites of pseudowavellite are divided into six biaxial negative segments. 1968I. Kostov Mineral. ii. ix. 458 Dehrnite and lewistonite for alkali-bearing apatites. |
