wyerone, n. Biochem.|ˈwaɪərəʊn| [f. wyer- (of unknown origin) + -one.] A fungitoxic phytoalexin, C15H14O4 , produced by the broad bean plant. wyerone acid: the organic acid of which wyerone is the methyl ester, and which has similar properties.
1963Chem. & Industry 14 Sept. 1509/1 In his paper Antifungal Compounds in Plants, Dr. C. H. Fawcett reported on the progress made in the study of ‘Wyerone’, the ketoacetylenic ester from broad bean seedlings. 1968Jrnl. Chem. Soc. C. 2455/1 The most active fractions contained several components..but repeated crystallisation from hexane gave a major product (0.001{pcnt}), m.p. 63.5–64°.., which..was christened wyerone. 1970Phytochemistry IX. 251 The concentrations of wyerone acid in infection droplets and diseased tissues and its relative activity against germ-tube growth of Botrytis fabae and B. cinerea are consistent with its proposed role as a phytoalexin. 1982J. W. Mansfield in Bailey & Mansfield Phytoalexins viii. 258 Wyerone derivatives are normally highly fungitoxic, but the activity of wyerone acid, the predominant phytoalexin from leaves, is pH-dependent. |
