The name of Max von Laue (1879–1960), German physicist, used attrib. with reference to a method of X-ray diffraction developed by him in which a narrow parallel beam of polychromatic X-radiation is directed at a thin crystal and the resulting diffraction pattern is recorded on a photographic film placed either in front of the crystal (with a hole for the passage of the incident beam) or beyond it; as Laue method, Laue pattern, Laue photograph; also Laue condition, each of the three equations (one for each linear parameter of the unit cell) which must be satisfied for a diffracted beam to occur in a given direction for particular orientations of the crystal and the incident beam; Laue spot, a spot on a Laue photograph corresponding to a diffracted ray.
