A cattle disease, usually fatal, found on land deficient in phosphorus, caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and characterized by paralysis or muscular weakness; bovine botulism. Also attrib.
1790E. Helme tr. Le Vaillant's Trav. Afr. II. v. 92 The first [disease], called at the Cape Lam-Sikte, is a sudden paralitic stroke. 1798S. H. Wilcocke tr. Stavorinus's Voy. E. Indies II. 64 The lamziekte, is when the cattle are not able to stand; it comes on gradually, and is slow in its progress. 1896R.
